To provide zealous advocacy to indigent clients;

To assist clients in achieving the best possible outcome for their criminal, child welfare, or juvenile delinquency cases by utilizing sound legal strategies and providing access to relevant social services, treatment processes, and mental health and substance abuse evaluations to reduce recidivism;

To maintain fiscal responsibility to those counties funding the Carson City Public Defender’s Office; and,

To be a leader in indigent defense in rural Nevada and the gold standard that all other rural Nevada public defenders emulate and call upon for assistance.

• Passion

  The Office of the Carson City Public Defender (CCPD) employs those who are passionate about indigent defense services, regardless of race, creed, color, religion, national origin, gender or gender identification, politics or political affiliation, education, mental health status, or substance abuse history.

• Curiosity

  CCPD employs those who are curious about the law in order to challenge the status quo, dedicated to learning and honing their craft through legal research, continuing education, personal and professional development, with the ability and desire to improve their trial and appellate skills.

• Integrity

  CCPD is funded with taxpayer dollars. As public employees, we owe a high level of integrity to our clients, the Courts, and the agencies – Federal, State, or local – that provide funding for our cause. Integrity also encompasses honesty -- honesty with our co-workers, the Courts, our clients, and – most importantly – honesty with ourselves and introspection on what we do and where we need to improve.  Furthermore, we do not criticize failure of outcomes, but respect and encourage calling out bad attitudes, lack of honesty or openness to others’ perspectives, beliefs and needs of clients, co-workers and the Courts.

• Respect

  CCPD strives to show clients, co-workers, witnesses, and those with whom we connect on a daily basis the level of respect we expect from them. We handle conflict professionally; it is acceptable to agree to disagree with those with whom we interact in the performance of our duties to represent our clients.

• Compassion

  CCPD represents good people who made bad decisions, addicts, and persons who lack direction, support and financial means. It is the duty of each of our employees to show compassion and empathy to our clients. It is through compassion and empathy that we learn about our clients, their stories, how they arrived at these pinnacles in their lives that requires appointment of counsel to assist in resolving their legal issues. The ability to be compassionate allows our employees the ability to find solutions that satisfy the client’s legal challenges and goal resolutions and works to reduce recidivism.

• Cooperation

  CCPD must cooperate with clients, Courts and court personnel, prosecutors (whether City, County or State), treatment providers, the Department of Corrections, and more. The ability to cooperate, especially with co-workers, is paramount to our small organization’s success. Cooperation is also required to allow the Office the ability to serve as the gold standard for other public defenders. The shared experience of our staff is our greatest asset. Cooperation with other public defenders in rural counties benefits all by allowing the free exchange of ideas, strategies, and information, which will ultimately assist indigent clientele.

• Zealous Advocacy

  Each employee, irrespective of job title, must naturally have the desire to zealously advocate for the office’s clients, clients’ needs, and their co-workers and their co-workers’ needs. Zealous advocacy is not only required by the Rules of Professional Conduct but is a core trait of an effective litigation team.
